As of late, winter has been getting me down. And I mean down, down. It’s that time in the winter season when you are really ‘gatvol’ and just want to give up, sit in front of the TV, admit defeat, stuff your face with a big bowl of popcorn and wash it down with a glass of vino (and I say vino because it sounds less hectic than wine…but who am I fooling. No one. It was wine. Lots of wine.).
And that’s exactly what I’ve been doing for the past couple of weeks. Neglecting my body, turning a blind eye to the fact that my jeans are sitting a little tighter, and that I’m officially only wearing one single outfit every single day. Thank goodness I don’t have to go into an office every day - that would have been an absolute disaster.
You wouldn’t think that just a year ago I was a bright eyed, positive about everything, green-smoothie-queen of a health coach. Helping other people with their emotional eating problems having conquered my own. But alas, here I am. I literally came full circle and now need to be the client, not the coach. Lucky for me I have my health coaching education in my arsenal and, upon staring at myself in the mirror long and hard the other day, told myself that I am WAY better than this. I deserve better than this. So does my body. And so do my gorgeous jeans that I can’t wear anymore - they deserve better. So I took out my old notes and re-studied them - specifically the ones about Mindful Eating and its importance in your every day life. When I wrote those notes to give to clients I was fully living the Mindful Life. Looking back I’m so proud of myself for doing that. And am very excited to get back to that point!
Anyway - I wanted to share this personal story with you because I am sure there are many women and men out there that feel the same way right now. It’s mid-July and we’re all pretty ‘gatvol’. So let’s get un-‘gatvol’ together and get healthy together. And let’s take the first step - eating mindfully.
Mindful Eating isn’t some spiritual experience - it’s literally sitting down, looking at your beautiful plate of (ideally healthy) food you just cooked, saying thank you, and eating with intention. Taking a bite and chewing your food, thinking about the tastes and textures, and enjoying all the flavours mingling on your tastebuds (instead of shoving it down with a shovel (sorry - a fork) standing up in the kitchen watching TV). We forget that digestion starts in the mouth. Your saliva contains loads of tiny enzymes that start digesting your food in your mouth before you even swallow! That’s why everyone says that you have to chew like 20 times before swallowing. Yes it will help you eat slower (and possibly less), but it’s mainly to start digesting your food so that your stomach and intestines don’t have such a tough job ahead of them!
Technicalities aside - Mindful Eating is really just about not eating with distractions. Not looking at your phone. Not watching series. Share a meal with your family - talk about the day, laugh at your partner’s stupid jokes, and chew chew chew. Take note of what you’re eating and enjoy your food. You worked hard to make a healthy meal! Don’t let it go to waste by not tasting how delicious it is.
I hope this gave you some inspiration for getting healthy again if you’ve been feeling down in the dumps lately. It’s helped me just to write this post so thank you if you read all the way through!
